Betty Fretz - Heucheras and Other Spring Lovelies
I was away for our last meeting so these notes are from Brenda Spears.
Betty's presentation was very informative on Heucheras.
Here are some of the points she shared:
Advantages of growing Heucheras
- They are Native North American plants
- easy to grow
- drought and shade tolerant
- Great choice for containers
- The leaves often change color - provided variety of colour for your garden
- Long lasting flowers
- They are often not bothered by pests or diseases
When growing them use little if any fertilizer, and they shouldn't be allowed to dry out or stand in water.
Heucherellas are a hybrid of Heucheras and Tiarellas - the flowers are white and prolific but are infertile.
Other Spring Suggestions
Hellebores - are great spring flowering plants that start in March. Brian Bixley has a great selection of these in his garden. He is opening his gardens to the public for the last time this year on Sunday September 26th.
Brunnera and Pulmonaria are the good spring flowering perennials.
